With WindowBlinds you can easily customize the look and feel of the Windows operating systems. ‘Skins’, which is the visual style, allows the user to
modify all kinds of user interfaces within the operating system, for instance, the title bar buttons, the task bar and the start menu. Simply changing the color is not WindowBlinds’ only feature—windows can be made more functional by adding buttons to the title bar, buttons to roll up, link, program short cuts and even media player controls. One can even add more commands to windows—to do this, right click on the title bar of a window, this will minimize or maximize it. Since this application is especially adapted for graphics card, it can actually make your computer work faster than Windows Aero.

The application is very intuitive to use. The Start window is the ‘Look and Feel’ section which showcases all the skins that are currently available on the PC; it automatically recognizes the type of operating system that is in use and then displays the appropriate skins. Apart from the default and classic skins supplied by Microsoft there are four additional skins from Stardock designs. Once you choose a skin, you can tweak it. While with the free unregistered version you can’t adjust the saturation, hue, brightness and color intensity of the skins, but it is possible to change the skin fonts by making them larger or smaller, replacing the font type and adding text effects such as shadow and outline on controls. Once you have decided on a skin, move on to the‘Transparency and Blur’ tab to change the transparency effects of the task bar, menus and window frames—if you don’t have a high-end graphics card, set the transparency slider bar to zero, change the icons on the toolbar in the explorer window, where you can either stick with the icons of the chosen skin, or mix and match with other skins. Finally, set the animations that the computer uses when fles are copied, moved or deleted. If creative users want to view or experiment with different wallpapers, they can set up WindowBlinds to randomly, in a sequence, change their desktop wallpapers every week, day, hour or every time they log in.

After deciding on the skin appearance and wallpaper, the artist in you can get down to the nitty-gritty and use ‘Settings’ to override any default options.Apart from basic settings like enabling system tray icon on startup, playing sounds, using skin supplied icons, you have the option to decide if you want to enable Hyperpaint, disable standard windows animations, and specify commands to actions like right click and double click on title bars. Tweak your skin setting more with changing the taskbar and start menu visual styles, and setting shell styles in other skins. If you feel confident enough to tackle the ‘Advanced User settings’ one can even control the speed and animation effect of mouse over actions, enable enhanced remote desktop support and enable the skin to use 3D plugins—with this last option you can add more elements to your Sidebar menu in Vista. Finally, the advanced user can also tweak the way individual applications look—simply browse to the location of the application, load it, and specify which skin and animation settings that the program has to use.
